As a result of acclimatization and planned research in Australia, many of the lakes and rivers in the State of Tasmania, New South Wales, Western Australia and Victoria are well stocked with trout, which sometimes reach a large size. The island State of Tasmania is world-famous as a trout fishing centre. Freshwater murray cod, perch and blackfish are found in good number in Australia. The Murray River, which forms the boundary of the eastern States of Victoria and New South Wales, and its many tributaries provide good sport for thousands of anglers, including trout in the upper reaches. Murray cod may weigh up to 150lb; another Murray River fish, the callop or golden perch, grows to over 50lb. Macquairie perch (to 11lb) and silver perch or grunter (to 6lb) are also taken. Another perch, or Australian bass, is taken in coastal streams and estuaries. Australia was said by the late Zane Grey, noted big game authority, to possess the finest big game fishing grounds in the world. Centre of interest for sportsmen is Montague Island, off the coast of New South Wales, where there are marlin, tuna, shark and other big fish. The tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef, which extends for about a thousand miles along the east coast of Queensland, form Australia's most fascinating grounds; there are many unusual varieties of fish. There is good beach and rock fishing almost everywhere.
